Introduction

The plan has been devised and Gyges, accompanied by his wife to-be, sneaks into the king’s bedroom whilst he sleeps and finishes the job. Gyges, thus, gets both the kingdom and the woman.

Once the plan had been devised and night had arrived — for, indeed, Gyges was neither let go, nor did he have any other options; he was either to die himself or kill Candalues —, he followed the woman into the chamber and once he was inside, was handed a dagger and hid behind the door.

And afterwards, whilst Candaules was sleeping, he came out of hiding, killed him and took both his wife and the kingdom, who was remembered by Archilochus from Parian in an iambic trimetre.
